Hi Lou,
I have gone round and round over the decision, but i have used 17 inch snow tires in 225/4517 configuration in my last three cars (BMW 3-series, Audi TT quattro and now Aero). I have used Pirelli P210's and Nokian Hakkapaliita's (probably mis-spelled). They are dedicated high performance snow tires that do quite well in snow and are acceptable when the pavement is just cold and dry/wet. I live in coastal new England and we are not deluged with heavy snow. If i routinely had to contend with deep snow, I would fit 16" wheels with 205-55 or 60/16's that would be narrower and have more sidewall - which are superior characteristics in deep snow. So far, in five years, the 225/45-17 has done well and retains the capacity for spirited driving when conditions permit.
Best,
Eric
