Check past psts, I know I've seen this discussion before.

I believe the problem is caused by different air side pressure drops across the heating and cooling coils in the A/C system. If the discharge vents on the passenger side are closed off, there is too much restriction in the ductwork for the volume of air being delivered by the fan. The air takes the path of least resistance (through the heating coil only) and that is why it is hot when delivered through the rear vents.

As an experiment, replicate the problem and then decrease the fan speed. If it is truly caused by too much air for reduced discharge size, then with slower fan speed the air should pass through both coils and be the proper temperature.
