Reducing inventory and making more room is a major consideration almost as important as profit. When you dealer trade for a car you invite all kind of contingencies, damage, defects, liability during transport. Sales will you take it?" People who are picky about their selection are usually managers are buggers about swithching people to cars in stock, "Gee I realize it's not the car you want, but if I make the deal sweet enough will you take it?" The folks who are picky about their selection are usually the smart shoppers too and won't let you make a decent profit so the dealer feels good about trading for the car.
In answer to your second question, the incentives are greater on purchasing vs. leasing. For a Linear sedan there is $750 more for a purchase. On a convertible it's $1,000 more for the purchase, on an Aero $2,000, very seldom is the purchase and lease incentive the same with Saab models. The exception now is a Linear Wagon.
