Thanks for the comments, everyone. I understand the merits of using dedicated winter tires in the wintertime, but clearly, not all cars need them.
My old '88 9000T was a prime example of this. That car was simply FANTASTIC on its OEM, *non M+S* Pirelli P600s in ANY sort of weather--dry, cold, monsoon, severe snow, etc. I used to take that car up to New England to go skiing all the time. Once, I (unwisely) drove through a Nor'easter, and the 9000T was an absolute champ. I passed about three MB 300Es that day, all of them slammed into the guardrail (ouch!)
My mother's MB 190E, and later, a C280 with traction control, were both HORRIBLE in the snow. We had a set of Hakkas for those cars.
Older BMWs are usually pretty horrible in the snow, but the latest 3-series (RWD version), and the latest 5-series, are actually decent in the snow, even on their OEM "all-season" Continental tires. I was quite surprised...
Anyhow, I'm leaning towards getting a set of 16" rims with taller winter tires because the roads in and around NYC do indeed get pretty ugly... I don't want to bang up the stock 17" rims...
Thanks,
Jason
