I just moved onto this BB from the 9-3 and NG900 BB. This subject on those 2 BB's has been well illumunated. Surpisingly not on the 9-5 BB.
The consensus on these sister BBs is that this is correct.
Suffice it to say that, Fun-To-Drive (octane 92/93) is in direct opposition to fuel economy minded owner (octane 87).
Since 87 preignites earlier than 92/93, the boost is "backed-off" by the Trionic T-7. Less boost = less gas.
Many SAAB owners feel they get worse MPG with 87. It's very common after switching fuel grades from 92/93 to 87 to notice that the car feels sluggish. So to compensate, they apply a heavier foot to the accelerator than they might normally apply--so the initial appearance is worse MPGs.
Lower octane does have a benefit to thoses readers (not you Mike) who live in colder climates. Winter drivers will find that 87 and or 89 grade will be easier to start in 20 F, 10 F, 0 F, weather compared to 92/93.
