...it is correct that automatic transmission cars cannot be push-started if you have a flat battery. That's why the manual indicated that you have to use a booster cable and connect it to a working battery to help start the car.
For manual driven cars with flat batteries, just gather some strong guys to push your car (Saab is heavy) forward and when the car has gained some speed you simply need to engage 2nd or even 3rd gear and press a little on the accelerator, the engine will come alive...of course, you have to leave the ignition on while the car is being pushed.
