Can't say as I wasn't there, but a Viggen or an Aero or even an SE with the traction control disengaged is a tire smoker! That bog you feel could be the traction control cutting the throttle even before you notice the wheelspin.
Also, torque is definitely limited in lower gears by engine management. Engine seems to get much more powerful in 3rd gear and up.
And familiarity with the Aero will make it smooth as anything. There are no hitches in an Aero's giddyup. The four won't take the lugging that a six will at low speed as in second gear starts so you may have to select first if you're not rolling that fast, but clutch take-up and shifting characteristics are second to none. Linkage could be a litter crisper, but hey, they fixed that in the new 9-3 those who have driven it say.
