Knocking is definatly not normal however it takes a technician with a fair amount of diligence to find it sometimes. We have a tech in our dealership who is a veritable pit bull and has spent upwards of 16 hours on a car to eliminate some of the noises that seem to be all to common on Saabs. The catch is that he works on an hourly scale(as do I) and can spend alot of time on a problem where a regular tech on a flat rate pay scale(paid by the operation not the actual time spent)will soon seek greener pastures and send you home with that familiar phrase "no problem found".
There is a guy in Smithtown Who has a business called Star Automotive(maybe two R's in Starr) If you can't find him in the book he is directly across from Competition BMW BEHIND the yellow building with the deli. I worked a few weeks for him and he seemed to be pretty talented. It might be worth an hour of his time to take a look. Loose lower control arm rear mounts and bad wheel bearings seem to be the two big ones.
