No excuse not to have dual-mode capability...

Sure, analog currently has the largest nationwide (USA) footprint, but GM could have easily made the OnStar system dual-mode, i.e., CDMA or GSM (digital) plus AMPS (analog) for rural areas.
My OnStar cellular service is provided by Verizon, and they already have a pretty large nationwide CDMA digital network in place. It's quite frustrating that the OnStar system in my MY2002 car cannot utilize CDMA. Somehow I seriously doubt that GM will provide an upgrade path to digital. If anyone knows otherwise, please chime in.
From what I understand, the FCC is removing, or has already removed, the requirement for cellular carriers to provide AMPS (analog) service. Surely, analog will be phased out to allow for more spectrum to be dedicated to digital.
So, in effect, the OnStar system in my brand-new car is already obsolete!
I would like to reiterate a point made earlier by someone else:
DO NOT EVER READ OUT YOUR CREDIT CARD OVER THE ONSTAR SYSTEM! IT IS AN ANALOG SYSTEM WHICH IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO EAVESDROPPING! If you need to recharge your units, call from 1-888-4-ONSTAR from a landline phone.
