It's a mild solvent and will help "clean" them, especially if there is some white wax in there. I'm not sure if the peanut butter trick works to remove old wax or if it just hides it but it's certainly worth a try. I think somebody suggested peanut oil. Perhaps that may work too.
I found that folks who use silicone on the black rubber end up always having to use it because as things age, it lightens the rubber. I'm currently performing a test and haven't used any silicone on our 2000 car and so far so good. I use it (Black Magic it's called) on our 1999 and find that now it looks like crap if I don't use it a couple times a year.
Maybe I have buildup on the 1999. I'll probably break out the WD40 and see if it does the trick. Note: be sure to wash the car, etc after doing that since it IS a solvent.
