Remember that a turbocharged Saab is not your father's Oldsmobile. It needs a little more attention than the average car.
By attention, I mean that when starting a cold engine, let it warm up for a minute, don't just blow out of the driveway when it is still getting toasty.
And after a hard drive, let it idle for 20-30 seconds so that the turbo can spin down. IOW, after going 70mph+ on the highway, then exiting, don't just pull into the rest stop and shut off the engine. Take a little care of it and it will last a long time. Some folks on this board have spoken about a "turbo free zone" where they keep the revs low for the last mile to their house.
Big trucks also all use turbochargers. They get off the highway and don't even shut the engines off. Or they wait 10 minutes before they do so. And they get 1,000,000 miles on a turbo.
Unfortunately, Saab doesn't really bring this point home because they don't want to scare anyone off. But it really matters for the long run.
I know that this is not directly addressing your post, but it might keep this turbo failure from happening in the future.
