Hi,
We're all 9-5 owners and love our cars, but we're not going to
tell you that it has no problems.
MY99 9-5 has been the most problematic of the 9-5's because of the
reason you mentioned. If you can get yourself a MY00 or MY01, you
may have less reliability issues.
I guess the most troublesome issue is Direct Ignition (DI) Cassette.
You need to drive the automobile (don't go to an auction). If
there is any hesitation or misfiring, walk away from the automobile
or have seller/dealer replace DI and then drive it again.
Second is the Saab Information Display (SID). Switch through all the
functions of SID and see if any pixels are missing. If pixels are
missing, walk away from the car if seller/dealer will not replace SID.
Third is the turbo and blue-smoke. Start up the car and let it idle
for a good ten minutes. If you see blue-smoke coming out of tail-pipe,
have them replace turbo before you buy.
The next issue is the battery, but if you can do all of the above,
the battery is probably fine.
9-5 is a reliable automobile, but MY99 is first or second year of
production of 9-5.
Good luck!
thanks
Jae
