Actually, by my caculations, neither will give the correct speed reading.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but, as I understand it, the first number is the tire width in mm, the second is the heighth of the side wall as a percentage of the width, and the third is the diameter of the tire at the rim.
My '02 9-5 Aero has stock 225/45/17 tires. This would yield:
225 mm * .45% / 25.4 mm/in = 3.98 in
17 in + 3.98 in = 20.98 in tire diameter
The 205/55/16 snows would yield:
205 mm * .55% / 25.4 mm/in = 4.43 in
16 in + 4.43 in = 20.43 in (2.6% smaller than stock)
And the 215/55/16 snows would yield:
215 mm * .55% / 25.4 mm/in = 4.65 in
16 + 4.65 in = 20.65 in (1.6% smaller than stock)
Also, I don't see how either of these two tires could rub the wheel well as both are smaller than my stock tires in both width and heighth.
Another thing to think about, aside from higher speed than expected, is that you'd be logging greater miles than those actually traveled. Though, the figures would be somewhere around 75 or 100 mi per year assuming 18k mi/yr and 3mos/yr on winter tires.
