Actually, "viscosity modifiers" (used to be called Viscosity index improvers) work by thickening a lower viscosity oil as it warms. Thus, a 5W30 oil is a "5" weight oil with an organic molecule that causes it to thicken as it warms. But at high shear rates(inside the bearings), the thickener is less effective than it is at the low shear rates where the SAE test is performed. This is why Saab prefers synthetic 5W oils be used- synthetic has an inherently high viscosity index, and a 5W synthetic without any modifiers might measure out to be a 20 weight at operating temperature. Thus, a 5W synthetic might perform under some circumstances the same as a 20W50 natural petroleum oil (although in most regards, it will not.)
