You can fit low-clearance chains or cables to a 16 inch wheel with standard sized tires. The Aero does not have enough clearance for wrap-around chains or cables with the stock 17 inch setup.

The Spikes-Spider (not "Spider-spikes") will work on the Aero, but it is pretty expensive. The Saturn drivers use these a lot - the SS is sold thorough Saturn dealers. I have also seen them at the local Volvo dealer, though they wanted well over MSRP for them.

I use 16 inch alloy wheels and snow tires for winter, but the wheels protrude out to the same level as the sidewalls, so I am reluctant to put on chains that require a tensioning device that goes across the wheels. Also, many chains wrap around the sidewall too far for a -55 or lower aspect ratio tire, threatening major damage to the finish of your wheels. I have yet to locate decent chains that will not harm the finish of my wheels.

I suggest one of two alternatives:

Buy a set of cheap steel wheels and mount snow tires on them, then buy a set of chains. Figure around US$500 to US$600.

Buy a set of Spder-Spikes for US$300+ and enjoy them. This is the route I think you should go. If I did not have a 4wd Cherokee for foul weather, I would already own a set for my '01 Aero Wagon.
