As prices went down and incentives went up for 2002, it's difficult for a dealer to be competitive on a new 2001. It's still a new car, not a used one and the bottom line is although the dealer will try harder on the 2001, you might look at a 2003 Linear SportWagon for comparison. There's a great debate on this BB which is better, V6 or 2.3t, I'm a 2.3t guy. I would say that if the 2003 comes within $5,000 of the 2001, the 2003 is probably a better value as two years is alot more than $5,000 in depreciation. No special financing or leasing availible on a new 2001.
And remember, 2002 was a year for significant improvement in a 9-5. Fresh styling, front suspension and subframe, 5-speed automatic and more.
I bet you are shocked by the numbers. Trading a 2001 on a 2001, or trading any low mileage late model brings into reality the size of the first couple of years depreciation and the effects of having to pay tax and license all over again. The depreciation curve is much less steep after the 3rd and 4th years and you've gotten more time amortize the tax and license.
