So you were on a 5,000 mile oil change interval with Mobil 1 for the first 100,000 miles of ownership ? Just stay on the Mobil synthetic for as long as you own this ride, change your coolant at prescribed intervals, and you'll (knock on wood) have your original turbo in the car the day you trade it/sell it for your next SAAB 9X.
Turbo failure was commonplace on the oil-cooled turbos that were circa 1978-1984. But as water cooled turbos were installed, the failure rate really diminished. Combined with that was the improvement of lubrication that would not coke under heat. Early turbo specific oil such as Valvoline Turbo V, dealt with this, and then of course the introduction of Mobil 1 to the marketplace.
(I think the 1985 16v turbo of a friend of mine went over 300,000 miles on the original turbo and 150,000 on the original clutch.)
