I have photos of the Audi powertrain which was stretched out on the wall and with plastic windows on the display stand, at the 2000 NAIAS (detroit auto show). Holy watchmaker, batperson, those guys are nuts! All for what, 20 or 30 more horsepower? Multiple cam drives - I think a humongous belt running from intake cam to intake cam to crank, then a chain from intake to exhaust cam. Then there's the twin turbos. Then there's the Torsen differential gears - lots and lots of them. Remember, Car and Driver broke the transmission on an A-4 Quattro during their "long term" (24,000 miles) test. They did not include the (are you sitting down?) $10,000 repair in the cost-per-mile because the car was still under warranty. Yes, I know, they routinely break Saabs during their tests too, but it ain't $10Gs for a tranny. Even with dealer labor.
