At the 2002 International Tire Exposition and Conference, Hunter showed their new tire balancing machine - which also measurers side force and tire irregularity. Any radial tire will have some measurable side force when rolling straight ahead. The trick is, if you can measure them, you can position the tires so they balance each other.
I plan on visiting the Hunter Tech Center ... once I get my Nokian WR snows ... to prepare a story showing the capability of the machines.
Every dealer should have one of these. Tire store employees are often untrained in proper balancing techniques...
PS: you should switch the two front tires and see if it affects the "pull" ... unless the tires are directional, in which case, switch front to back both sides. And if it pulls slightly to the right, are you certain it isn't just following the crown of the road? Does it still pull right in the left lane of the freeway? That is my level of tolerance: if the car will climb "uphill" and cross the freeway lane, then it needs to be addressed.
