df, Damage can occur that is not readily apparent. On my SAAB 99, the head gasket blew (one of four times) dumping water into a cylinder and causing the engine to stop. I did the right thing and shut down almost simultaniously with the appearance of the white steam since this was time number three. Got towed to the dealer (in Kaiserslauter, Germany) and they milled the head and replaced the headgasket. Well in a few weeks, I found that the car was blowing oil back into the top end. This was being caused by a broken land on one of the pistons. The land is the area between the piston rings that keeps the rings in place. With the land broken, the rings were moving and not allowing proper compression. I don't know if a compression check would have found this in its early stages. Of course driving in Germany probably helped me find it sooner than later (80-100 mph on the Autoban).
