I like TGs suggestion of using a multi step system. May I suggest a Meguire's or Zymol or Mother's? I would first treat your black trim with whatever it is you use as it helps keep any wax that gets on them from sticking. I would then make sure the car is very clean, polish it, and then wax it. Remember to be gentle with the paint and don't use the same towel you used to take off the polish to remove the wax. The towel will have some residue of the cleaners on it.
I have two separate towels, one for wiping off polish and one for wiping off the wax. I keep them very clean and make sure to use fabric softener when I wash them. They're actually soft old Ralph Lauren terry towels which work quite well. I have a black car so I take every precaution to not swirl.
Some people (even some professionals) will tell you to use a back and forth motion instead of a circular motion to help make fewer swirl marks. I disagree and use a circular motion based on this premise. If a circular motion creates swirl marks, then a back and forth motion will make lines in the paint with strangeness where you went back and forth. Basically, if a circular motion makes swirl marks, you're doing it wrong. By doing it wrong I mean one or more of the following bad things; 1) Using too hard a material to buff with. 2) Using too harsh a compound or polish. 3) Skipping a step between a coumpound and waxing. 4) Bearing down too hard. 5) Using unlcean materials. 6) Polishing a car that was not washed correctly. etc.
