There's three levels of OnStar. The basic plan as comes in '03 Saabs, Safe and Sound, emergency notification and the like. '02 Saabs came with the middle plan, Directions and Connections, which is $399 to renew, and allows you to access the GPS info from the OnStar operator, where's this address, where am I, how do I get where. Then there's Luxury and Liesure.

Once OnStar is activated, you may then purchase (or in some cases they give you 30 free minutes to start like with a new Saab) prepaid cellular phone service. OnStar is just a fancy cellular phone that goes up to the sattelite instead of the local cell phone towers so it works everywhere, even in the middle of nowhere. The car will have it's own phone # and dialing is accomplished using voice activation (no keypad). Cost as about $15 for 30 minutes for emergencies or $40 for 100 minutes for a year.

A friend of mine who travels from SoCal to Oregon loves his personal calling cause it works everywhere. There's never any roaming or long distance charges. And it's a full 3 watt hands free phone already installed in the car.

OnStar's not for everyone, but it can be useful, especially in emergencies. When you talk to OnStar they have you located on a GPS system so there's no confusion about where you are as when you call on your own cellphone. And if your car is stolen they track it and listen in on the thieves the same way.
