The carbuying experience is purposely set up to benefit the dealership, because each negotiation is kept separate and discreet. It comes down to the buying skill of the consumer and the desire of the dealer to make a given deal on a given car on a given day, and frankly what Joe or Jane got the other day isn't relevant because the dealer isn't obligated (or inclined) to acknowledge or match any other deal they've ever done.
If someone says to a salesperson "I know for a fact that Fred bought this car for $X last week," they will look at you and say "Yeah so?" or "I doubt it" or "Well that was because ....". So do a buttload of research, go in to the negotiation knowing that you can walk away at any time and your life won't end if you don't buy that particular car, and prepare to spend 4 or 5 hours in hell.
Of course that's just MHO, I could be wrong.
