The used car climate is much different now than a few years ago, thanks mainly to the magic of leasing. Tons of cars coming back after 3 or 4 years, some dealers just have too many and so they go to auction. Or it was leased through a company like Chase which, in the case of my two Audis, wasn't too inclined to move on the buyout so I just gave them back. Wasn't anything wrong with them, just wasn't comfortable owning a modern car without a warranty, and when you factor in the higher interest rate on a used car loan plus a new set of tires plus the warranty, I was past new car payment territory.
There are ongoing discussions in the Roundel about whether the whole CPO process is worth the money, with hot opinions flying back and forth pro and con. In fact, some dealerships will purposely take two almost identical cars and only put one through the CPO program, then park them side by side on the lot. Some buyers will go for the cheaper one, some for the warrantied one. But either way, the dealer makes a sale.
