They do not share the same transmission-manual or automatic. The Aero w/ 5speed automatic is a hoot to drive, especially in Sport mode (shouldn't this be the default setting?)!
There seems to be little reason (other than personal preference) to get a stick over the new auto. The new autos get nearly the same gas mileage, get the 20sec overboost feature and you don't have to deal with clutch repairs. Driving my wife's '01 9-5 LPT auto wagon just reinforces this in my mind as I slave away in my '94 900SET with its "prone to failure at anytime" cable clutch and the sometimes "which gear am I in" cable actuated shifter. At least SAAB changed back to a hydraulic clutch and a rod shifter linkage in the '98 900 and 9-3s.
Strange that SAAB would go back to a cable clutch in the new 9-3SS!
