Closed on a cosmic blue w/ charcoal Linear 5 speed yesterday.

* Handling is very nice, especially versus my '97 900SE (which is going to family for another 100K+). I got to test the ABS and the steering 2 miles from the dealer when a 12 pointer bolted into the road! It doesn't take much to beat an NG900 in handling but my own real-life road test made it pretty clear which is the better car.

* The 5 speed manual is much better IMHO than the auto. The autos I tested were sorta jerky down low. The hydraulic (?) clutch is much better than my 900's cable clutch. I'm debating whether I like the throttle control---the slow spin up/spin down of the engine when shifting makes shifting smoother but loses some responsiveness. I'm used to pulling my foot off the gas and the engine instantaneously dropping to 1-1.2K RPM. Also, IMHO the auto's paddleshifters are a hoot---and leave 'em to the birds.

* I've already decided on mudguards and a wooden shift at 30 days. Any other suggestions?

* The dash does looks like crap. Anyone saying anything to the contrary obviously should buy domestic. But, I won't shell out for a glossy wood replacement or fake aluminum. One advantage of the hideous wood is kids' fingerprints don''t show---my two year old is in love with dashboards---when the car is garage-parked and mom/dad is in the car of course.

* I'm debating XM radio but the cabling I've seen so far is wretched---nothing like scarring a $35K car like it was a '77 Skylark. Hello GM?!? You DO own a stake in XM!

* Can we get Hirsch kits in the US yet for Linears? They have 'em in the UK... More HP would be very nice...

* For anyone interested, I got GMS pricing w/ loyalty and w/incentive (c. $28K). I get a date with Mister IRS man to pay tax on the incentives! For any future GMS buyers, you may want to figure out the tax hit (c. $1,300? in my case) and work out a deal with the sales manager to avoid the taxes.

* Cosmic Blue is soooooo cool---the best Saab color for the Snowbelt---except Viggen yellow.
