the base size at the time (I think it's been upped to 16" now). We've got 205/50-16s for the summer (Michelin Pilots, which ARE unuseable in any low-grip conditions, even with aftermarket siping) & 195/65-15s for the other 8 mos (BFG Advantage GTs from Sam's Club, $56 ea). My wife HATES the Pilots all the time, since they track thru all the imperfections in the road, but I have to use them June-Sept 'cuz they're more funner :). The 195/65-15s really smooth out the roads, & their winter traction is even better than the T/A M+Ss I've run. Since my wife hates the Pilots, I can't really run a true snow tire that much of the year. And, since we bought the car for my wife to drive...

Yes, Michelin now owns the tire division of BFG, but only for the past couple of years I think. I've had the best luck with them in the winter of any other M+S rated tires I've tried. I don't know if Sam's carries 'em in the 205/55-16 size or not. They do carry another BFG Advantage, the "Plus", but I haven't tried 'em yet (I don't like the tread design nearly as much as the GT's). I've heard good things about Uniroyals, in general, but I haven't tried any of theirs since I found the BFGs.
