It's for a spare, like I mentioned in the original post.

If my DI ever failed (like on a major road trip), I'd swap my spare and continue on my merry way. Once home, I'd put the failed unit back in and call Saab Roadside assistance and have them pick up the car and replace the bad unit.

A DI cassette in my sister's SE V6 failed on a Sunday while she was 240 miles from home. Even though the car quit (on the expressway) in the Chicago metro area and she was able to get the car towed after calling Saab Roadside, all the local Saab dealers were closed, and all the Enterprise outlets were shut, too. So, she had to borrow a car, drive home and come back the following weekend to pick up here car again. What a PIA!

I'm planning on keeping my 9-5 for a while, probably well past the warranty period, and am planning on using it for some significant road trips. I just don't want to be stranded on a lonely highway in eastern Montana on a Sunday night. The cost of a spare DI would seem cheap compared to the inconvenience and expense of having the car towed to the closest Saab dealer.

In general, the DI is probably fairly reliable. I had a Passat that left me standed on the highway twice, once with a failed DISTRIBUTOR and once with a failed fuel pump. (Those in addition to all the other problems with the car.)

Given my intention to keep the car for a long time, I'm not opposed to paying $300+ for a spare DI, I just can't see why there should be a frikkin' $250 core charge.
