Looking into the motor management options using Tech II, a knowledgeable mechanic can see the designation of the ECU (at least with the Hirsch upgrade). He doesn't even need to drive the car (driving and feeling the difference is very subjective anyway).
Main thing is that if someone ever wants to "update" your motor management software he can destroy your ECU upgrade! This is a very unlikely possibility and you should advice them not to hamper with your ECU software!
The other variable settings e.g. alarm settings are not affected, though.
