I had the same short list here in the UK and bought an Aero earlier this year.
The Jag-X Type is very, very common here in the UK and yet Jaguar are having to scale back production big time - a lot (and I mean a lot) of unsold vehicles lying around. The perception in the market is that the X-type is a 'Ford Mondeo with a dress on' it is not a proper Jaguar........depreciation seems as steep (vertical?) as a Saab - is that a comfort?
I was very tempted by a 2.5 X-Type Sport - the manual had too much slack in the transmission - perhaps all that 4wd gubbins dosen't help? The automatic trans version - ranks as possibly one of the worst I've had the misfortune to drive - sad (and I'd be biased towards the UK product too).
The X-type handling is not in the same league as the Aero - despite all the motoring journals claiming otherwise (must have been a very good press launch?)
Here in the UK the X-type looks like good value until you add a few must have options and the like the new 9-3 it all gets stupidly expensive.
The only Jag that I drove that competed with my final choice was the XJ8 3.2 Sport - though it would have had to have been a used one as a new one was a long way out of budget.
I have a work colleague who bought a X-Type 2.5se with all the toys back in February - sadly it is falling apart - with the Ford cost cutting measures showing through.......like the gas tank fuel filler flap snapping in half - yes its cheapy plastic.
X-type? No thanks.
