Perhaps someone on the board fully understands how the DI is designed, or has seen a schematic of the DI. I would tend to doubt that a correctly functioning DI would overheat and cause failure with the key in the on position.
I do know that from my failed DI experience that it can draw a lot of current when it does fail. I suspect that something in the DI goes bad which causes a constant flow of current to one or more of the ignition coils. When my died, I removed it and took it to the dealer's service manager, who agreed to replace for free if I re-installed it and had the car towed to the shop. (what an inconvenience). Apparently the tow truck driver left the key in the on position while towing, because when the dealer service department went to fix the DI, they advised me that the whole DI wiring harness had to be replaced, as it had fried up. (they did not have the parts in stock to do this, so it cost me two additional days without the car). I would advise anyone with a DI failure that needs to be towed to either make sure the key is taken out of the ignition on position, or to remove the DI fuse. If I recall this fuse is 20 or 30 amps, and did not blow when my harness burnt up. That is scary, and I could see why that type of current draw could put a tired battery down for the count.
After this experience stranding my family late at night, I'm not entirely comfortable or happy with this aspect of the SAAB design.
