2003 Aero transmission

Just got the Aero and it has paddle switches on the steering wheel so I can shift manually. The verbal instructions were to use the Manual position only when the car is stopped but according to the owners manual I can do it anytime. Has anyone experienced using it? I just don't want to damage the car.
