Contrary to popular opinion on this BB, I've got my winter tires on 17" wheels (actually, the factory Aero wheels) I got the Pirelli tires, but the Dunlops were on my shortlist.
Anyways, the car handles very well considering they're winter tires, they can keep up with me as far as I'm comfortable pushing it on cold pavement.
Tire noise is a bit higher, but I suppose that's irrelevant when you're talking 16 vs 17" wheels.
I recommend the 17" setup as long as your not always driving in deep snow. I think the 17" setup is best when, like you say, you're spending most of your time on dry or plowed roads with the occasional snowstorm.
Another thing you'll want to consider is price... You'll probably pay twice as much for comparable tires in the 225/45 17 size. My set of Pirelli's cost me $1500 CAD for the set (tires only), the Dunlops were priced similarly
