I last reported that SAAB told my dealer that the rain sensor units are problematic and that they should order a replacement for my '02 ARC.

Went in today to have the unit replaced. Car came out of the shop in five minutes (I knew something was up) and the service advisor told me the sensor seemed to be working alright and that SAAB told them to not replace it. She also tried to tell me that I must not know how to operate the device.

"Unacceptable," I said. I explained the unit does not, in fact, function properly, that I certainly do know how to operate it (having read the manual) and that I never know when it will work and when it won't. I also told her that the loaner I had last week in the rain worked perfectly under varying rain and mist conditions. She got the head tech, who started to tell me it seemed to be working and that SAAB sent a technical advisor to the dealership recently. Apparently, the SAAB rep. complained that they were replacing too many rain sensors. Gee, I wonder why?

I got the tech to replace the unit without too much argument. Good on his part. Hopefully, this unit will function properly because it doesn't do much good, if I have to constantly toggle the sensitivity switch or the wiper stalk to "wake up" the system.

So, for all of those who have written here complaining about poorly functioning rain sensors, please take the car to the dealership and MAKE them replace it. The only way SAAB is going to get the message is if we owners don't accept substandard performance on any part of the car. Even though we all tend to get great deals, they're still too darn expensive to walk away saying, "Well, I guess that's just the way they work."

Thanks for listening to my rant. Best of luck on those rainy/misty/foggy days.
