the reduced friction is built into the component design, but not from the block material. roller cam followers reduce friction (a lot!), direct chain drive water pump (balance shaft chain and a more efficient pump design anyways) and steering pump (inlet cam) are more efficient than belt drive, aerodynamic crank counterweights reduce windage losses inside the engine - don't forget, the crank isn't just churning through air, there's got to be lots of oil mist adding density to the mix.
Anyway, the requirement for Mobil 1 or "boutique" oil in the 9-3SS is to satisfy the programming in the oil change monitor, not any unusual engine requirements. If you ignore the oil change monitor and change oil every 3000 miles/3 months, you can use conventional oil (course, you can't hit the viscosity and ACEA A3/B3 targets with conventional,but a good 10W30, 10W40, or 20W50, depending on temperature will keep you running.
