Fan/motor starting on it's own when car is parked

This has happened a couple of times in the last week now, and I'm perplexed as to what's causing it.
After using the remote to pop the trunk or unlock the door, then opening the door, I've heard a whirring in the engine compartment. Last night, I popped the trunk to put a box in and closed it. Then I opened the unlocked drivers door to throw a couple of things into the front seat. When I opened the door the whirring started. It wasn't an interior fan and I assumed it would stop itself in a couple of minutes. An hour or so later, I went into the garaage again and could still hear the whirring.
At that point I got in the car and tried to start it. It flashed the Key not recognized code and wouldn't start. So I turned the ignition off, and again tried. This time the car started. After a minute, or so, I shut the car off. No more whirring noise.
This is a new car for me. It's a '99 9-5 SE 2.3t Sedan. When I picked the car up last month, the SID was scrambling pixels, so the dealer swapped it with the one from another car he had. It was a 9-5 SE V6. I'm wondering if the SID might be trying to start an auxiliary heater that I don't have in my car, or if some other protocol is programmed into it that is different that for my car.
Or, maybe it's just a flukey thing. Any ideas would be appreciated.
