I've got a Viggen, not a 9-5. I'm quite surprised myself at how smooth the Saab 2.3 is - my C900 never ran like this (must be the balance shafts). Now, if I keep the Passat in auto mode, it's quiet and smooth, but then I've noticed it stays in 5th even at 30mph. If I put it in tiptronic, however, the engine will yell and will deliver an annoying vibration through the steering wheel at anything above 4000rpm. At that speed, the engine feels loose and tinny. Granted it is a loaner, and I'm sure has seen some abuse, but then it's only got 3500 miles on it!
I'd be interested in how you think the VW's hold up over time. We had every intention of buying a Jetta, until we found out how good a deal we could get on the Viggen. But I've been very disappointed in the 3 VW loaners we've gotten from the dealer. All have had very low miles (less than 5000), but all seem to have had a hard life already - rattles, broken trim, etc. Our Viggen has twice the miles (some hard ones), and looks and feels like it just came off the lot - it's a tight little car. I'm willing to give VW the benefit of the doubt, since these are loaner cars, but right now, I'd have a hard time recommending one to anybody.
