You still need a ground reference for any voltage source. Otherwise it is like trying to check the voltage of a battery with only one lead on your DMM/DVM.
I am asking because of the problems with resistive grounds on 3 wire sensors creates O2 sensor CELs, and some folks get the sensors replaced when the sensor is fine. Reseating the sensor will often fix the problem. One person posted that he traced the resistance to the down pipe to turbo joint, and he re-established a ground there by backing off the nuts and reseating them after clean etc. So I have been hoping that the sensor ground would not be through the exhaust pipe, and that the 4 wire design would address this problem.
