Losing the accessory drive belt could cause all of those symptoms. No power steering, no alternator current to recharge the battery, no water pump to circulate the HOT engine coolant to the radiator or heater core.
Notice I used HOT not warm for the engine coolant. The engine temp gage may not have been an erroneous reading. With no water pump to circulate the coolant your engine may have actually been as hot as the temp gage indicated. Maximum reading of the gage could also be the default position without the alternator working, combined with the extreme cold temps recently you may not have experienced any engine over temperature while driving home. How is your luck?
My advice, don't drive it until it is fixed. Belt replacement is a D-I-Y repair, but at this time of year you want a heated garage to do it in.
