I have the Saab/Thule bars for my '02 Aero wagon and I've been quite happy with them. I assure you, these bars are indeed made by Thule (at least mine were) The "Saab" bars are a custom fit for the 9-5 and are not adjustable for width (that I know of) I assume the "universal" bars available from your local rack dealer are more expensive due to the adjustment mechanism, and no doubt Saab buys many more of these than your average local shop.

Perhaps your local dealer has a set in stock and would let you test-fit them on your truck? Otherwise, you may just have to measure both and compare the cross-sectional shape of the bars you're mounting to. If the Saab ones don't fit, perhaps it would be worth the extra money to go with the universal fit.

If you go with the universal- check to see how width adjustments are made. I had a set of Yakima bars for my Jetta, and while they were universal fit, initial set up was a bit of a pain in the ass. I wouldn't want to do that every time I switched vehicles, but it was OK once. What I'm saying is that even if the bars technically fit either vehicle it might be too much effort to re-adjust them each time.

I use my Saab/Thule bars to carry our mountain bikes. They go on and come off easily. The bars will fit any Thule carriers, and most Yakima carriers. I use the Thule Velo-vise carriers and they work nicely. I think Saab also offers a nifty lift-rack which extends down to make loading your bike easier. My opinion is that if you're fit enough to enjoy biking, then you'll probably be able to lift your bike up to the height of your wagon's roof.
