The first thing you should try it to check what is call the "Start volumn" in the radio set-up functions. It used to be set by the factory at "9." Turning it up to "24 to 26" will improve the sound quite a bit. To do this, turn on the ignition (you don't need to start the engine), turn off the radio, hold down the WB (Weather Band) button and turn on the radio. It should say "Start Volumn" first, turn this up to "25" or so, mine is at "26" and wait a few seconds. It will be quite loud at first but goes back to what you had before after about 5 seconds. What this actually does, or so I've been told, is turn up the "gain" on the system, which gives you a fuller sound.
If it already set at "25" or so, then go with the speaker idea.
