A Saab '9-1', based on the Impreza platform, could be a winner IF, (IF emphasis added) it gets a proper Saab interior, improved sound deadening, and the WRX turbo engine. Add some unique exterior styling cues and you've got a car worthy of the Saab badge. Folks, this could actually be a very good thing.

I really appreciate the drive/powertrain and AWD in my Sube - it's rugged, reliable and could very well last +200k miles. Subarus have an outstanding repair record and most consumer organizations include the various models in the 'recommended' category. Where the vehicle is lacking, IMO, is in the attention to interior trim, seating and sound deadening. Even in the top-of-the-line Bean and VDC models, the leather seats are just thrown over the same seat frames (w/ limited manual adjustments for the front passenger) that my base model OUtback has. Of course I'm talking Outbacks here, but the same thoughts apply to the Impreza platform.

I'm not sure the Cimmaron analogy is quite accurate - the Cavalier was and always has been a POS and the idea was doomed from its conception. Maybe a better analogy would be the current Volvo 40-series cars - aren't those based on a Mitsubishi platform? I won't get into the pros and cons of the Volvo x40's other than to say I'd rather be driving something Subaru-based.

All said and done, I'd rather drive our 9-5 anyway, but the idea of a new 9-1 is intriguing.
