It is not normal for the exhaust smell to permeate the cabin of your car as you sit at a traffic light at idle. Just to clarify, if you are in traffic, it is possible for exhaust fumes from the vehicles around you to permeate the cabin.
Still, if you feel that when you are alone at an intersection at idle, and you smell exhaust, you may have an exhaust leak that you can have fixed under warranty. That is not "normal".
If you are using midgrade fuel, try filling up with premium gas. If you already use premium, then switching gas stations might work for you.
Otherwise, please consider these winterblended fuels can be the culprit if you live in an area that uses reformulated gasolines.
The likelyhood of your AERO (Mitsu) turbo being bad is very very slim--but other 9-5's with the Garrett turbo have had some issues.
I have a 2002 AERO 5 speed, and a 2002 9-3 SE Auto from which I extend you my advise.
