I'm not sure if that extendable net is standard equipment- Mine was a $600 Canadian option (and worth it) I have heard stories here about a "mix up" where some '03 owners got this net instead of the net all the rest of us got (a simple net which stretches across the floor) If you got this net- keep it. If you want to fold the larger portion of the seat down, you are correct in saying the net will have to go. Fold down both back seats, give the housing (the part the net retracts into) a bit of a smack on the driver's side (in the cross-car direction) and it comes right out. As the Hayne's manuals say: "Installation is the reverse of removal"

This net is an important safety feature if you intend to load cargo above the top edge of the seat. Combined with proper load anchoring using the cargo rails it will provide protection in the event of a collision. DO NOT load cargo above the top of the rear seats (not including headrests) without properly securing it or all that extra money you just paid for the safety of a Saab will be wasted. Another great advantage of the net is it will extend to the roof with the seats folded down (just behind the driver's seat) This allows you to have a huge, safe area for large loads (or your favourite pet!)

By the way- IMHO, a linear is a far better car than a Passat!
