Jon:
I own a 2003 9-5 Linear and a 2001 Volvo V70 wagon. I just returned a 2000 9-3 to the dealer as the lease was up. While the Saab and Volvo are both great cars, I have noticed the maintenence demands and cost of the Volvo is significantly higher than Saab.
There is a "service engine" light on the Volvo that is tripped by mileage (not engine condition) and you have to take it to the dealer to have it reset. They will only reset it if you have them perform their prescribed check up including checking the suspension, etc. If you refuse to pay the $150-$200 every other oil change for this needless service, you are stuck driving around a $30,000 vehicle with an "service engine" on. Do I sound annoyed?
Otherwise the Volvo is a good car. Saabs always seem a bit more sportier to me, while the Volvo seems to drive heavy. You can't go wrong either way - just bring your credit card with you to the dealer if you go Volvo.
Good Luck,
David B
