My sister is shopping for a car in this price range as well so I can give you some of my own research/experience through helping her. I have heard good things about the SVT Focus. Currently they only come in the ZX3 flavor (ZX3 didn't receive really good crash scores), but they are coming out with the ZX5 version shortly. The SVT model is the only one I'd get. However, if you're going to pay ~19K for a Focus, than I would recommend looking at the Civic, Altima, Accord and Imprezza. All of these are in the same ballpark money wise. I would lean towards the Accord or the Imprezza WRX (sweet car - nice short throw shift). By the way, my other car is a Ford Contour SVT (slightly modded).
