The whole heat exchanger assembly is located directly behind the radio and the ACC display/control unit. Both the driver's and passenger's side stepping motors are placed on the corresponding sides of the heat exchanger unit.
You can get access to the driver's side stepping motor by removing the cover underneath the dash, or the glove box if we're referring to the passenger's side stepping motor. I haven't performed these operations myself, but I did have the chance to watch the tech do it. IIRC, there are some more things to remove under the dash, but anyway there's surely no rocket science involved.
If you are facing the left (driver's) side of the heat exchanger, the stepping motor we are talking about is the upper-right one (upper-left for passenger's side). You can easily replace the motor, or replace the small lever, that links it to the flap shaft after removing the motor.
The flap and the shaft are inside the heat exchanger. And you have to remove everything to get access to it. Now here's where rocket science is involved :-))).
Regards,
Sergey
