Well Audi fan or not, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder turbo engine is a dog until the boost comes on (5 valves per cylinder or not). No matter how fanatical he is, he can't deny that. Hell the Saab 2.0 LPT/T is a dog too until the boost hits. You can't expect a BPV to fix an inherent issue like that.
My comment about it being weak, was with regards to the power, not the build. His comments about racing are laughable, considering how little the race engines have in common with the stock ones. The only reason Audi has won a lot of races, is because they have poured massive amounts of money into it for PR reasons. I could talk about how much the 750 HP Pikes Peak Viggen and 600 HP RallyCross 9-3 have won, but I won't since they don't have anything in common with stock Saabs except for the engine block.
Yes surging can very well be caused by a small turbo running too high boost pressures (and thus suffering too high backpressure and heat), you can just try asking any of the really knowledgeable people here.
I'm not impressed by the his ranting on how much power the 1.8T can take. Fact is that it needs a bigger turbo just to get above ~200 HP. 280 HP with an ungodly expensive turbo upgrade is also not very impressive, considering that the Saab 2.0 LPT(with "only" 4 valves per cylinder) 150 HP, can be upgraded reliably to 220-230 HP with a simple ECU upgrade, and 265 HP with ECU upgrade plus 3" exhaust system incl. sports cat. If you start changing the turbo, intercooler etc, 300 HP isn't hard to get. The 2.3 Aero engine is easily upgraded to 300+ hp without changing the turbo or other engine components. 460 HP with stock internals is also very doable.
The 1.8t's KKK turbo is nicely suited for it's stock performance, but it is certainly not suited for high boost applications, and it's most definitely not "undertuned". Yes I include the turbo as part of the engine as it's not exactly a cheap thing to change out.
As for surging, I haven't heard any Saab turbos suffering this, and using a BPV upgrade to fix it?
Sorry, but your friend sounds like the usual type who frequent Audi and BMW forums. Brash, mud slinging and not thinking before they write. I'm sure he'll write yet another scathing mail, but I don't really care.
