In the old days in the US, octane could be rated using either the Research methon (aka RON) or Motor method. The RON method always gave a higher number and gasoline (petrol) stations always used to have big signs touting their "100+" octatne fuel. When the US government started mandating unleaded fuel about 25-30 years ago, they also changed the way octane could be advertised. If you look at the signs on the pump, you will see in the fine print "R + M / 2", meaning that they take an average of the two octane rating methods. The 91-93 octane we see in the US is about the same as the 98 octane you see in Singapore.
There have been many discussions on this borad regarding the merits/futility of using higher octane fuel in our Saabs. If you use a lower octane fuel, you will not damage the engine thanks to the knock sensor. What will happen is that the knock sensor will retard the timing resulting in lower performance and fuel economy. In hot weather, I would think that the difference would be greater than in the cold.
