I pulled in the driveway last Friday night and my idler pulley was making noise. I performed the replacement over the weekend, the car needed a new belt too so it was a good time to do the work. According to the dealer there are two pulleys that have been failing regularly, so I replaced them both.
Tools needed:
Hydraulic or bottle jack
2x6 piece of wood
Metric ratchet set
Torque wrench
Metric box wrenches
½” square piece of steel or ½” breaker bar with 12 inch extension
car ramps, preferably Rhino Ramps to accommodate the car’s low profile
1 2-3 inch long nail
paper & pencil
Parts needed (sourced locally due to time constraints):
Gates serpentine belt from NAPA, $33
2 replacement pulleys from dealer@ $36 each
Total parts cost: $105
Time to complete: 1-2 hours depending on skill level and assuming all of the above are on hand
Steps:
1. drive car on ramps
2. remove plastic shield attached to the underside of the car. There are 5 small bolts, 1 is in the right wheel well, wheel removal is not required
3. Gently support the engine by the oil pan using the jack and block of wood
4. Remove the right side engine mount yoke covering the belt area, there were 6 bolts total: 4 bolts holding the yoke to the engine, 1 bolt from the yoke to the body, and 1 bolt holding a bracket
5. Optional: remove rubber bellows at the front of the car leading from the Air Mass Meter. If you do this be careful to protect the wires inside the AMM
6. Draw a diagram of the belt routing before removing the belt
7. Insert the steel or breaker bar with extension into the belt tensioner near the firewall, and take the tension off the belt. There are holes on the firewall side of the tensioner to insert the nail (above) and keep the tension off.
8. Remove the belt (did you draw your diagram???)
9. Replace the 2 pulleys, the second one is a very tight fit, requires some patience
10. Reinstallation is the reverse. Getting the new belt on was made much easier with access to underneath. The yoke requires the following torque values (As posted by Roger on this BB): Yoke to engine 47 N-m or 36 ft-lbs, Yoke to mount 105 N-m or 78 ft-lbs
